Can Dogs Drink Fruit Juices? Are Fruit Juices Safe For Dogs?

Whatever we humans are snacking on or drinking, most of us can be sure our beloved pooches are sitting nearby hoping to get a taste. But what about when we drink fruit juice? Do our dogs have the same craving with fruit juices as they do with other human foods and beverages? Can dogs even safely drink fruit juices?

The quick answer is not a simple yes or no. It depends on the fruit juice, and there are plenty of exceptions for individual dogs. As always, you must consult your veterinarian before sharing any human foods or drinks with your pooch.

Here’s what you should know about giving fruit juices to dogs.

Are Fruit Juices Safe For Dogs To Drink?

Dog Fruit Juices 2

While dogs can usually drink most fruit juices safely, it’s recommended they shouldn’t. Even though most fruit juices aren’t harmful or toxic to your dog, it’s better to feed them whole fruits as snacks than have them drink juice.

Whole fruits are packed with nutrients and vitamins that can benefit your dog, and they taste delicious, too! But a lot of commercially sold fruit juices are loaded with sugars, artificial colors, and preservatives that are not good for your dog at all.

Dog’s simply do not have the same physical digestive capabilities as us, and thus have a harder time processing things such as lactose, alcohol, and caffeine. But if you are making fresh fruit juice at home, a little sip from your dog will probably not upset their stomach.

Again, if you would like to add some fruit to their diet, it’s better to feed them a couple small slices of an orange or apple instead of having them drink it as a juice. Always ask your vet before introducing new foods to your dog, even if they seem safe.

Never Give Them Grape Juice

While most fruit juices, in moderation, are fine for your dog to drink, make sure they do not have any kind of grape juice. It’s a bad idea to give anything derived from grapes to your dog, whether it is raisins, juice, or wine.

Grapes are toxic to dogs and can lead to serious issues such as kidney failure. If your dog eats or drinks anything derived from grapes, immediately call your veterinarian and look out for these signs and symptoms:

  • Loss of Appetite
  • Lethargy, Weakness
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal Pain
  • Severe Dehydration

At the end of the day, all your dog really needs as a drinking source is clean, filtered water. Anything else like fruit juices can be given but only in careful moderation.

Make sure to speak with your veterinarian to make sure your dog isn’t allergic to any ingredients and to find out more information.
